My brother Will is 2 years younger than me and we’ve always been close. We bond over our love of books and nerdy things like Star Wars, we’ve seen upwards of 100 movies in the theaters together and we both love a good blue raspberry icey. So when he asked me if I wanted to tag along on a road trip to Colorado to see his girlfriend it was a no brainer. Junk food, a book on tape (yes, that happened) and 1,280 miles with my brother? Sign me up.
We left on Wednesday night and fully intend to drive the whole 20 hours straight through but we ended up stopping somewhere in Iowa to sleep for 3 or 4 hours. Iowa is boring during the day, but it gets worse at night.
When we finally crossed into Colorado at about 3pm the next day and could see mountains in the distance we were both WIDE awake and on the edge of our seats, we LOVE mountains. I called my husband at one point and couldn’t even hold a conversation because the entire time I just kept saying things like, “Oh my word look at that! Babe, we’re in the mountains!” or “Oh my word, Will is that snow up there??” This went on for the next 5 hours until we finally reached the “road” to the ranch that Will’s girlfriend Kayla is working on. It wasn’t really a road, more of a winding two track that went up the side of the mountain. Yeah. I had a love/hate relationship with that road– I love views, hate heights. On the way up with mountain Will decided to call Kayla and figure out exactly where she was so he could come surprise her (she didn’t think we were getting there until the next day). They’re talking on the phone and meanwhile I’m spazzing out a little bit because the GPS couldn’t find the ranch and I really wasn’t a fan of this road. Kayla asked Will what was wrong and he says, “Oh Katie’s just freaking out because she’s scared of the mountains, well she loves the mountains she hates driving in them.” ……..smooth move right?
Kayla goes, “There aren’t mountains in Iowa…”
Will, “Uh, surprise!”
We pulled into the ranch and spotted Kayla walking away from us toward the barn, she turned around when she heard the car and started running toward us. I turned to Will, “Go! Run!” So he did and it was pretty much like a movie them running into each other’s arms while I’m still putting the car in park, officially establishing my 3rd wheel status for the week.
I hadn’t been able to get to know Kayla before she left for Colorado and it was great to finally be able to see this girl I had been hearing about for months and become friends with her. Let me just tell you, she’s amazing. She is easily one of the kindest people I have ever met, she is self sacrificing to a fault sometimes. I adore her. The whole weekend she did everything she could to make sure we were having fun and to make sure I wasn’t feeling too much like the 3rd wheel that I was 😉 I had a blast with her.
The first morning we were there Kayla took us to this waterfall on the ranch, oh man was it incredible! I took a ton of pictures and I’ll share a few with you. Some of them are iPhone shots so please note that in the captions.
Later that night we watched some pretty awesome fireworks being lit off of this cliff:
If you look really closely you can see the people who were up there lighting them off. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my camera so I don’t have any awesome firework pictures.
The next day we rode an ATV up into the mountains for a few hours. Once again I left my camera behind, I was a little nervous it would get hurt. Aside from the temperature changing from around 80 degrees and sunny to maybe 45 degrees and hailing and back again we had a blast! The views were incredible and even though I was constantly telling Will to slow down I had so much fun. Here are a few photos I took on my phone:
We went out to dinner later that night and afterward we stopped at two spots I’d seen along the way and I took a few pictures of Will and Kayla.
They’re the cutest couple and the mountains sure don’t hurt!
Such an amazing trip, it is truly awe inspiring to see the beauty that God created up close.
Thanks Will and Kayla for letting me tag along and for letting me take these pictures!
